People: Michael Connor of Connor Homes

Screen shot 2011 10 25 at 11.28.19 AM
Michael Connor is the founder and CEO of Connor Homes, a home design and manufacturing company headquartered in Middlebury, Vermont and Winterthur's licensee for producing Winterthur-inspired mill-built homes.

Connor was drawn to historic architecture at an early age, growing up surrounded by historic homes in his native state of Rhode Island. He attended Providence College as a psychology major but fostered his interest in historic architecture by visiting museum homes in Newport, Rhode Island and other nearby museums and historic sites. Connor started a construction business in Middlebury, Vermont in the early 70s and immediately focused on building homes with scale and proportion that mimicked the homes built in New England during the 17th and 18th centuries. With his wife Linda, a home designer and artist who shared his appreciation for classical architecture, Connor built a company known for its ability to incorporate architectural details from the past, building homes that were often mistaken for original historic homes.

Connor recognized early on that by building homes in a controlled factory environment, a better quality product could be produced at a more cost-effective price. While many other home manufacturers were building homes of varying styles and quality, Connor pioneered the concept that architectural details could be reproduced in a factory setting with precision and efficiency that would make them available and affordable to the general public. This concept along with a host of construction services including high-end architectural design, is at the heart of the company’s mill-built architecture.

In 2010 Connor Homes joined Winterthur Licensed Products. "This is a great opportunity for us to get involved with Mid-Atlantic architecture and continue to build quality homes that are affordable and get the stamp of approval from a prestigious museum," Michael Connor stated in a fall/winter 2010 article in New Old House. The Connor Homes Winterthur Collection can be viewed online at the Connor Homes Web site.

Connor is a member of the National Association of Home Builders and the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, is a past board member of Addison County Home Health and Hospice, and currently serves on the board of directors of the Sheldon Museum in Middlebury, Vermont. In his spare time, Connor enjoys playing the banjo in his bluegrass band Snake Mountain Bluegress.

Connor Homes Joins the Hurricane Irene Recovery Effort

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, Connor Homes heard from many of our friends and clients checking to make sure that we were alright. Thank you for your concern. While we were very fortunate not to have been impacted, some of our employees, their communities, and our neighbors were not so fortunate. Hundreds of Vermonters lost their home, partially or totally, in the August hurricane.

Many of those families want to stay in their communities and will choose to rebuild rather than move. Our Simple Classics can be the right solution for some of these families. We are reaching out to local banks, to state government and to the newly created Vermont Irene Recovery Authority to cut through the red tape, and our own workers are volunteering to work around the clock to build these homes in record time.

We are offering reduced pricing, expedited delivery and Connor Homes' own framing crew to speed the building process for families who have lost their home to flooding. We anticipate that total construction time for a 1200-2000 sq ft home will be as little as 6-8 weeks, making it possible for some families to be in a new home before Christmas.

-We are a local company offering a Vermont-made product.

-Local labor can be used to install the homes, providing local jobs

-Our Simple Classics are inspired by historic Vermont homes and fit the landscape. These designs are complete and ready to be built.

-Our mill-built process is green as it reduces waste, jobsite traffic and uses local materials, and our completed homes are energy efficient and sustainable.

Have Crew, Will Travel

Connor Homes is excited to announce a whole new service for our customers: the Connor Homes Field Crew! Now our customers can avail themselves of our very own, factory trained professional framing and exterior trim crew to construct their Connor Home. The Connor Homes Field Crew program represents an exciting new chapter in the company’s continued quest to fulfill the promise of Mill-Built Architecture as being the best, most efficient and most satisfying way to build a new home.
While our company has many reliable, competent and otherwise well-qualified Preferred Builders that many of our customers can turn to for the on-site labor and oversight of their Connor Homes frame and trim package, we have long recognized that some of our customers do not have a Preferred Builder in their area. In this situation, we often assist our customers who have chosen a local, non-affiliated builder to complete their Connor Home, by providing labor estimates, information and training, and other company resources that will be helpful to the overall goal of a satisfying, efficient completion of the home. We will continue to offer back-up assistance and expertise to both affiliated and non-affiliated builders, but now take the field labor aspect of construction to a whole new level, by making available our own Field Crews to install and construct our own product on-site.

Learn more about this fantastic new service by downloading our Field Crew brochure, or call us at (802)382-9082.

2011-2012 Connor Homes Subscriber Program

Did you miss the 2010 Subscriber Program? Here's a second chance!

A Connor Homes Subscriber enjoys exclusive benefits and pricing. As a Connor Homes Subscriber, you can lock in your pricing for eight full months. We only require that the Exterior Package be built in our millshops between December 1, 2011 and April 30, 2012 and that clients have the financial flexibility to pay for the package at the time of production. Read the full details of the program HERE.

Why is Connor Homes offering a Subscriber program?

By reserving a portion of our production to customers with predetermined production slots, we increase our production efficiency. Having customers start earlier on the design of their homes allows us to complete drawings and shop paperwork ahead of production, which gives us increased flexibility in scheduling the millshop. In the way, the Subscriber Program allows us to "even out" production throughout the year.

If you haven't already chosen your home, look through our Sampler, order a catalog, or learn more about our custom design services. Want to learn more about our mill-built homes? Visit our Process page, and watch the on-site shell construction of a Greek Revival in nine days.

Letter from a Homeowner in Virginia

We're always happy to hear from one of our clients, and are delighted that this homeowner is so satisfied with their Connor home!

"You were all such a pleasure to work with.  Every contact that I had with the company was pleasant and professional, and at the end of it I was extremely impressed at how close you got to 100% with the details of the package delivery.  Avery, looking back I see that we exchanged literally hundreds of emails and calls, and in every single one of them your responses were quick, intelligent, thoughtful, and patient.

describe the image

Something I would definitely, emphatically do differently is that I would get the interior package from Connor.  At the time, I priced out what we wanted for the interior trim and thought it would be cheaper to buy it locally.  I was very mistaken.  We ended up having a lot of material waste and consequently spent much more, and in addition it's also likely that there was considerbly more installation labor time involved because it was so much harder to keep things organized compared with the way Connor handles materials.

VA House 4 resized 600

Our house is gorgeous, I think.  Everyone thinks so.  It catches my breath every time I drive up to it; a mixture of aesthetic admiration and nostalgia.  And the spaces inside are beautiful and work extremely well.  You know how books on home architecture always tell you to design at least one great space in the house, the kind that everyone wants to hang out in?  We have 4.

I wish I could just keep on buying endless houses from you, one after another, each one prettier than the last."

CONNOR HOMES AND WINTERTHUR MUSEUM ANNOUNCE EXCLUSIVE HOME DESIGN LICENSING AGREEMENT

Connor Homes of Middlebury, Vermont is pleased to announce that it has recently been granted the exclusive license to produce a line of homes to be endorsed by Winterthur, the museum, garden, and library that is the former home of Henry Francis du Pont. The design inspiration for this new line of historically authentic, architecturally detailed homes comes from the museum's extensive archives as well as interpretations and adaptations of existing architecture presently found on the Winterthur estate.

Located just north of Wilmington, Delaware, Winterthur is situated on 1,000 acres and is the repository of one of the most extensive and important collections of early American decorative arts in the country. There are 175 rooms in the house, containing approximately 85,000 objects. Tours and special exhibitions highlight aspects of the collection, which includes furniture, ceramics, metals, and textiles as well as fine art. The estate is also world renowned for its extensive naturalistic garden, a legacy of H. F. du Pont's horticultural knowledge and design skill.

Connor Homes has earned a national reputation for the design and manufacture of historic American architecture through a process it calls "Mill-Built Architecture." Michael Connor, company founder and CEO said the company is thrilled and honored by this one-of-a-kind opportunity to participate in the endeavor with Winterthur. He notes that it is a tribute to the years of research and development by the Connor Homes team that has earned it the reputation for an expertise uniquely suited for such an undertaking. "Our job will be to create floor plans and living environments that transcend the needs and requirements that motivated the original floor layouts, so that we can create new layouts suited to the present era, while preserving the architectural integrity and charm of a former time. Our company has demonstrated through its existing portfolio of home designs that it has the appropriate sensitivity to historic architecture that enables us to harmoniously meld the revered architectural elements of the past with the living requirements of the present."

The Vermont company points to an additional interesting connection between itself and Winterthur: Electra Havemeyer Webb, founder of Vermont's own Shelburne Museum and friend to H. F. du Pont, was among the first to interest him in American art and antiques. On a visit to the Webbs' home in 1923, du Pont was taken with the color combination of a pine cupboard holding pink Staffordshire dishes. That inspirational cupboard-a gift of the Webb family-with the original ceramics, is now prominently displayed at Winterthur.

"All of us at Winterthur are truly excited about this agreement-it's a perfect partnership," says Kristin L. DeMesse, director of Winterthur Licensed Products.  "Connor Homes' dedication to early American architecture and attention to detail is unsurpassed, and we know their Winterthur designs will be exceptional."

Work on the design venture will begin this spring when a team of designers from Connor Homes will begin researching the many historic house plans and photos in the museum's extensive archives. First plans and home offerings are expected in the summer and fall of this year.

For more information on Winterthur, including their extensive collection, programs, events, and exhibitions, please visit them online at http://www.winterthur.org/ or call 800-448-3883.
